Yoga

For my PEGA credit this semester I'm taking Yoga.  I've taken other Yoga classes before, but all I did was just follow the teacher.  This one is really cool because I'm actually learning the theory behind it, which moves are good for what, and why we do certain moves.  I'm totally obsessed now!  What's really cool though is that Yoga isn't just doing positions, deep breathing, and meditating like everyone thinks.  It really covers every aspect of your life.  Yoga has what they call "The Eight Limbs of Yoga".  Here's the first two limbs-

The first limb is Yamas- it's your attitude towards others & the world around you.  There are 5 Yamas:
Ahimsa (non-violence in thought and deed)
Satya (truthfulness in our life)  It says that if the truth could hurt others, you should stay silent.
 Asteya (non-stealing)
Bramacharya (non-lust and faithfulness)
Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)  Don't be greedy

The second limb is Niyamas- it's how you treat yourself.
There are 5 Niyamas:
Sauca (cleanliness inside and out)
Santosha (contentment in what you have & who you are)
Tapas (discipline)  Taking care of your body and what you put in it
Svadhyaya (study of sacred texts & of one's self)
Isvarapranidhama (connection to the Divine)

Anyways I just wanted to share my two favorite limbs.  I was really surprised to learn about this in an exercise class, as I'm sure most of you are as well!
